Crispy Baked Tofu
This crispy baked tofu recipe is one that we stumbled into after refusing to replace a non-stick pan that had become decidedly sticky. Our usual method of preparing crunchy tofu by coating it in cornstarch and frying it in hot oil in the skillet was not working in our old, sad skillet. The cornstarch would just slough off, and the tofu would disintegrate as we’d try to scrape it up as it stuck to the pan. So, we turned to baking the tofu in desperation. And after some trial and error, the baked tofu eventually became our go-to way of cooking it.
Method
Preheat oven to 450°F. Drain and rinse the tofu. Pat it dry with a paper towel. Cut into bite sized pieces. Toss tofu, salt, and cornstarch together in a bowl, so that the tofu is only lightly coated with cornstarch. If the cornstarch coating is too thick the tofu will taste starchy. Transfer tofu to a baking sheet, and coat with vegetable oil.
Bake for 15 minutes. Use a spatula to stir tofu on the pan. Bake an additional 10 – 15 minutes until the tofu is golden brown and crispy.
Enjoy this as a delicious vegan snack with a dipping sauce, or thrown in any number of dishes for an extra hit of crunch and protein. It also absorbs sauce fantastically and works great in noodle or fried rice dishes.
