Beautiful Oblivion Smoothie // S1E11 Eve

“Mmmmm. Tastes syrupy.”

Eve is one of the great Season 1 X-Files episodes. The creepy, murderous twins and the government backed cloning experiment are really memorable. This episode is also notable as the inspiration for the name of ’90s band, Eve 6, so because of this Eve 6 connection, we’ve made a vegan smoothie inspired by the song “Inside Out“. This Beautiful Oblivion Smoothie is designed to look like it’s been made from a heart in a blender. It’s a fairly tart smoothie, so you can be sure that it’s not spiked with digitalis.

We also liked the idea of doing a “heart in a blender smoothie” to reflect the episode’s red color palette. There’s Cindy and Teena in their iconic bright red coats, and the red hair of the adult Eves. The girls claim to have witnessed red lightening immediately before the deaths of their fathers. Mulder and Scully have a rental car with a startlingly red interior, which seems really odd after the parade of bland government issued sedans.

Final thoughts: this episode has another great Mulder slideshow (cattle mutilations, this time), that Scully and the audience have to suffer through, but which Mulder thinks is a clear smoking gun of extraterrestrial evidence. Additionally, in a happy(?) coincidence, we’ve learned that digitalis primarily affects the heart, which gives the episode further thematic linking to this smoothie. We’re already growing some foxglove in our back yard.

While a lot of smoothies use bananas as the base, Kayla is not a banana fan, so we used zucchini for this smoothie instead. Grate the zucchini using the large side of a box grater. Note: you can freeze the grated zucchini if you’d like. Freezing it in ice cube trays will make it blender-friendly.

Juice the blood orange. Add grated zucchini, blood orange juice, frozen blueberries, pomegranate juice, ground cloves, and a splash of vanilla extract to the blender. The ground cloves and vanilla add a warming element to this otherwise tart smoothie. You can optionally add a sweetener or a vegan protein powder, if desired.

Blend until smooth and serve immediately.
